Churchill's Pub and Grille
2010-07-16 18:49:27
Atmosphere – Great ambience, typical pub feel. There’s a slight British feel to the pub, but it’s not overly apparent. It is almost reminiscent of some European locale. There’s a pool table inside and a fire pit outside. Random booths and table pepper the establishment with various decorations beer decorations blanketing the walls. What makes it quite delightful is the huge assortment of beers they feature on tap displayed as laminated ads on various walls which include price.

Beer – They have an excellent assortment of beers on tap that are changing monthly. They will also have a featured beer that is tapped from a cask. The prices are reasonable and is definitely great place if you want to move out of your beer comfort zone to try something different. Be forewarned tasters cost $2 and a full pint is around $4-6. So if you know what you want, or are curious, just get a pint.

Wings – Their wings were excellent. They were not drowned in sauce, had a delicate balance of moistness and temperature. They offered a sweet BBQ and spicy thai (I do not recommend this). The wing size was average, but quite fresh and not covered in deep fried crap. We were there on a Sunday night which was technically a “wing” night, but will be discontinued. Wednesdays are solely wing night at churchills now. Excellently priced at $.33 a wing for wing night. They also have very tasty ranch dip (very light but creamy).

Pub Chips – Excellent excellent place for pub chips. Churchills aptly names them as Irish Nachos. Get these, you won’t be disappointed. Not exactly wedges, but they are larger than normal fries and include sour cream, bacon and chives. Everything’s better with bacon.

Service – Very attentive waiters. They know their beers are constantly changing, so they will be updated regularly on what types of beers are hoppier, maltier, smoother, etc. Very knowledgeable staff. I need to add this in there: Parking. Parking can be difficult as the front only contains about 10 spots, but you can pull in the side street / alley to the left (east) of the fence. The street goes back a ways and should provide ample parking.

Happy Hour Specials – Monday – Friday 4-7pm Tons o specials, TBD. Wednesdays are Wings Nights. $.33/wing

Other Food –Burgers n stuff. Why get anything else when the beer, pub chips and wings are so awesome.
San Diego Brewing Company

Atmosphere – Interesting place. Separates the bar from the restaurant pretty well. It’s a microbrewery and you can see the vats as you walk in. TVs cover the corners and a giant chalk
board in the middle shows all the beers they have on tap.

Beer – Good size assortment of beer. I recommend their home brews as they are quite tasty, but they offer several on tap that are not their own. San Diego Amber is quite delicious.

Wings – Their wings vary. This has been my frequent establishment as it is very close to my home. Wednesdays are their wing night. If you go towards the beginning of the night (about
7) you’ll get the nice tasty wings. If you go towards the end, there’s a higher chance you’ll get dried out, broken, toasted wings. Of death. And doom.

My last few encounters were absolutely splendid. Although for “wing” night there were no “wings” only drumsticks. Go figure. They offer Hot, BBQ, Teriyaki and *gasp* suicide. They also offer Russian roulette where they give 18 hot wings and 2 suicide. That’ll grow some hair on your chest (even if you’re a lady). For patrons that used to frequent this location note that the suicide wing sauce was changed and is milder nowadays to accomodate more customers, but still hot.

Pub Chips – The epitome of awesome. You can get normal pub chips with cheese or the works which are with cream and chives and other goodness. It’s a huge mound of wedges and can easily serve 2 or more. They also blanket it with cheese.

Service – Pretty good. Waitresses are typically pretty attentive and polite. Usually greeted at front unless the “seat yourself” sign is up.

Happy Hour Specials – Wednesdays are wing night. $.40 wings served in multiples of 5.

Other Food / Comments – Great place in central San Diego for wings n beer.
Australian Pub

Overall, this place is excellent for a wing night with the guys. It's a typical pub with no frills. Seating is a bit sparse with the inside lightly littered with barstools and high bar tables. The beers on tap had a good variety, but were a tad pricey.

The wings were quite tasty. They range from mild to hells bells with another 5 heat variations in between and also offer spicy garlic and honey BBQ. Their heat scale seemed a bit off, i had tried the DOA heat (2 above "hot") and was fine, but i sampled a buddies "hot" and it definitely had a tingle that mine lacked. Wednesday has 1/2 off wings ($3 for 6) and $2.50 pints (for the cheap tasteless beer).

Good beer (primo, fat tire, Karl) was still 4.50-5 / pint. A bit cheaper if you get a pitcher.

Genuine Australian waitresses, service was a smidge slow, but the beer was quick and food was good. Pub chips with cheese were not the best I've had but tasty with the Cajun seasoning.

Good hole in the wall pub for wings n beer.
